I am making my first attempt at ripping a DVD to SVCD. I am using daro73's guide (DVD -> High Quality SVCD - Complete Guide in english/germ) from this site. I have sucessfully converted AVIs to VCD/SVCD and converted from PAL to NTSC in the past, so I am not a total newbie.
I had no problems ripping the VOBs with SmartRipper and extracting the audio with DVD2AVI. DVD2AVI reports that the source is 16:9, progressive,NTSC 29.97. I then created the TMPGENC project as shown in the guide. So far so good.
The problem occurs with the VFAPI converter. The 'dummy' AVI that is created seems to think the source is interlace. When I view the AVI I can see the 'comb' effect around anything the moves quickly. A sample mpg created through Cinema Craft Encoder shows the same problems.
I tried recreating the TMPGENC project. I tried changing various settings from Progressive (which is correct) to Interlace (just for the heck of it) and I still see the same problem.
Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?
Thanks.

29.97 = interlaced
Either you forgot to enable force film in DVD2AVI or you have a hybrid film ( mixed hard telecine, soft telecine, and or true interlaced materal ).
Do a search on force film and hybrid to find out more. -
Thanks. I'll check it out.
That's the one thing that I love about this hobby. There is always more to learn. -
the "fps" in dvd2avi's info box is not determined by the vobs, it's determined by whether you forced film or not..
if you turn on force film, the fps will be 23.976 fps, if u turned it off, it will be 29.97, regardless if the source is FILM or NTSC....
