Well, bought a 24X Sony CRX-175A in Feb. Produced alot of fine SVCD's, although it was quite media fussy ( only Taiyo-Yuden blank CD-R's would avoid a power calibration error in DAO mode).
Well, it stopped reading and writing. Replaced it with my old 2X Memorex 1622, and now a Philips 40X both worked fine in my system. I realized that my warranty is still valid. When I tried to find out where to ship for repair, the original customer service number ( 800 342-5721) advised that I had to first go through Tech support. Then at Tech support ( 800 588-3847) , they told me I had to call with the system in front of me and not working , ie I would have to open up and pull out my new Philips and re-install the broken Sony, so that they could "check some things" BEFORE providing return authorization number and address. At this point , I might just as well throw it in the garbage, based on their "support". Perhaps this is their underlying strategy, based on current cost / features vs mailing a broken one for repair. I would love it if anyone had the address of a Sony repair facility in the USA, so that I could box it up and send it to them anyway!! Anyone TIA

i say reinstall the broke drive and then call back. don't do them a favor by not getting a new drive. who knows, they just might get it to work without shipping it anywhere.
