  1. I use smart ripper, DVD2avi, and tmpgenc Plus for ripping my movies.
All movies are ripped as VCD format.

By default, I notice some of the movies have low sound, is this normal?
I set the tmpgenc adv. settings to HIGHEST QUALITY
I heard increasing bitrate will help the quality of the way the picture is.

How else can I increase the quality?

I do not know anything about the interlace, gop, and other adv. features.

I am running an AMD XP 1800 1.5mhz w/ 768 DDR mushking Ram.
I do not want to put all sorts of settings that will bump my 4-5 converting to 8 hours.

  2. Low volume is very common, yes. Some programs (or ways to rip) give you means to normalize audio. As a general rule of thumb, yes, increasing bitrates will give you better results. However, your best bet seems to be reading some guides and doing some tests on your own. Good luck.

ofcause you can't expect the same video quality as per your DVD in VCD format.
