  4. I have found the Xvid codec in some of the mirc channels that host movies. Packetnews.com has a search function, type in xvid and you should be able to find it

  5. I've found less frustration with going to Target & buying pre-encoded movies already mastered to DVD with nice cases for just a few dollars each.....

i hear you. i rarely make any svcd's unless i'm ripping from dvd. too many problems with downloaded movies. ever sinse i got kazaa, my computer is littered with all kinds of codecs(no pun kitty). after they make a few conversions, they'll see that it better to rent a dvd and rip it or buy a premade movie. 3 to 14 hours to download, problems with codecs, audio and the like. 6 to 12 hours to encode. and then the the quality still might not be great.

    my opinion-
download movies to watch without having to leave the house and only if they come out before dvd.

to make backups, use a dvd disk(98% redution of audio sync, video quality, and other problems.

but hey, it's good practice if you have nothing else to do.

Right click the file select properties, second TAB should tell you all about the type of file it is.
