I had a similar problem after installing some dvd ripping software a few months back. The dvd would play but stutter espcially in full screen mode - the bigger the picture the more cpu usage, indicating that powerdvd must default to software decoding if anything is changed. I tried everything, including uninstalling the software, re-formatting the drive and even trying a different dvd player to no avail. I was beginning to get paranoid, thinking that the bios settings had been changed, but then a friend suggested using different dvd playing software. I now use Matrox CinePlayer with no problems) and use the same ripper software. In short, get rid of PowerDVD - it's crap!
