  1. hey guys i just found a box in the garage with a bunch of 650 mb cdr's. most of my SVCD's are around 750-800 mb. is there anyway to encode them and make them under 750 mb without huge quality loss?

  2. To re-encode from the file, you already loss some quality. But this is a doable thing. You can lower bit rate when re-encode or use same bitrate but use 2 Pass-VBR instead. This will result of smaller file size and a bit of quality loss.

  3. thanks man, but what would be a good cbr? 1600? 1700? also should i make it 352x480 instead?

  4. Yes you can use 352x480 as well, with this resolution you will not get a smaller filesize but you will have a better quality with smaller bitrate.

I am not sure what bitrate for you original source, and I can't tell what is a good CBR setting. If you want to decrease filesize from 800MB to 740MB I don't think you have to decrease bitrate that much. I would suggest decrease about 200-300 bitrate (if original was CBR 2520 you can try CBR 2200-2300 or you can try 2pass VBR avg 2200 max 2520)

Note: if you re-encode your mpeg2 (SVCD) I would suggest you frameserve from dvd2avi. I have tested re-encoding directly from TMPGEnc but quality wan't that good.

  5. But why?

800mb CDRs are free after mail-in rebate or maybe 5cents each.

Use the 650mb for regular file back up or donate them.

  7. I still do not know why.

So he found $10 worth of free 650mb CDR, so now he have to spend
    100 PC hours converting his 800mb svcd(s)?

Just the electric bill for the 100pc hours is probably around $10.

Use the "found" 650mb cdr for data/mp3, donate them to friends.
