A lot of the SVCD's that are DVD rips have a great picture but end up sounding very compressed in two different Apex players. The surround and sound effects are great, but the dialogue will have that harsh compression sound that makes my hair stand on end. I'm burning with Nero.
Is it the D/A conversion on the Apex players? Should I try another brand?
Is it the original rip?

Maybe it's your surround sound! When Pro Logic sends the ambient to the rear speakers, not all voice artifacts are removed leaving the "compressed" like voices on the background.

This may or may not be your problem. TMPGEnc 48>44kHz audio downsampling does a miserable job which particularly makes voices on audio tracks sound this way. I use SSRC as an external plug-in to TMPGEnc with Option/Environment Setting/External Tool/Sampling Frequency Convertor/...browse to SSRC.exe. Takes a little extra time to process audio but well worth it. You can get it here:
