  1. I want to use VirtuaDub to edit an AVI captured via DV cam analog throughput. I want to trim blank frames off the end. When I try to open the AVI file in VirtualDub, I get an error that says:

Couldn't locate decompressor for forma 'dvsd' (unkown)
VitualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

Can anyone tell me how to get the codec I need and install it?

Alternatively, can anyone tell me how to edit the original AVI in VV3 (i.e., delete the junk frames and resave the original AVI?)

    Thanks,

    Alan

Two problems there. First, the avi was probably captured as a type-1 avi file (that's the native DV format). It must be a type-2 avi (normal kind with audio interleave) for virtualdub to understand. (any editing programt that reads the codec should be able to write either kind). Ulead makes a free type-1 to type-2 convertor.

Second, you need a VfW codec for DV that virdualdub can understand (the MS included one is a directshow codec that Virtualdub can't read). To fix this, just install a compatible dv codec such as the one Canopus makes available for free (read-only). Search other threads for more information, there are several different ones available and other people have discussed this more.
