Sound plays but no voices!!!

Very strange problem...

Playing various mpegs and divxs, i can hear all the sound effects and music, but i cannot hear any voices. Very strange. If I crank the volume and listen very carefully, I can barely hear a scratching type noise which I think is the voice.

Any suggestions?

WinXP SiS chipset

I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the nimo codec pack, but no effect. Does this on multiple files.

If the sound is coming from only one of your speakers, try to load the video into Gold Wave and see if you have more one channel with audio. Play each channel separately. If the voices are on a separarte channel, just copy and MIX them onto the remaining channel, copy the MIXed chanel, MIX it onto the voice channel. Save and remux -- voilá!
