I've an .avi file of a movie and it only plays the sound out of my left speaker or headphones.

    Can this be fixed?

    Thanks.

You can clone it using an audio editor like audacity. Copy the sound with virtualdub - file-save wav. Then take it in the audio program and copy it to make a right channel. Then save it to a new file. Then remix in to the original video file. It won't be stereo - just mono but it will be balanced.

When you have created a second channel following Yoda's method you will have mono from both speakers. If you want to experiment a bit you can delay one channel (left or right) a few tenths of a second to create a false stereo effect. Experiment with it - some like it, some not.

I'm aware that this was an old question. But, I'd gotten stuck and forgot about this site.

OK, I was able to stripe and create a separate wav file of the audio from the original avi movie file. Then I made an attempt to correct the problem of a lack of sound from the right side using cool edit pro. Basically, I selected the left + right = left option to copy the sound from the left to the right. From this, the sound plays equally from both speakers. But, the new wav file of the audio is a gig in size. I'm not savvy with virtualdub to know exactly how to incorporate the new wav file back into the original avi file of the movie. Must this be accomplished using virtualdub or do I need tmpgenc? Also, if the original avi file of the movie is 700 mb and then I add the new wav file of audio that's now a gig. Won't the finished file be oversize now? Is there a way to shrink the wav file?

    Sorry to pester... Thanks.

700 MB ... AVI ... sounds like you probably have a file with MP3 compressed audio. When you do a SAVE AS, try selecting a different compression/format/type to save (128 Kbps is common - I'd expect a final file up to 100 MB or so).

Load the source AVI into VirtualDub, set video to direct copy, select the NEW wave file as audio source, direct copy as well, then F7 to save as a new file.

The file might be around 760 mb after you save it in direct copy because maybe only one channel was used to have higher bitrate for the video.Best to leave it the way it is if you want to stay at 700mb.
