Well I have worked on this problem for like 4 hours now. Im going crazy trying to fix it. When I put in a dvd and use WinDVD to play it, the picture is in very bad frames and is overal very very slow. The sound jitters aswell. Now I know its not WinDVD's fault because when I play a dvd from the hard drive it is perfect.

I know my setup is very capable:
    Core 2 e2160
    X1950 Pro
    Gigabyte DS3
    2GB ddr2 800
    LG GSA-4163

Do other players do the same thing with a DVD? Try VLC player. It uses it own codecs, so it may give you a sign that your installed codecs have a problem.

Other thing to try is to see if your DVD burner/player is in PIO mode.

To check DMA/PIO mode within Windows:

    Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

From there, right click on one of the channels and choose 'Properties>Advanced Settings'. All drives should be DMA mode. The 'Current Transfer Mode' for Hard drives is usually DMA 4-6 and DVD burners DMA 2-4, DVD ROMs usually DMA 2. If you see any in PIO mode, that can slow things down.

Changing them back may be easy or complicated. First see if you can change them in that window. If not, I usually uninstall the channel the drive is on and let the OS reinstall it. This will usually take a reboot. This will not damage any files on the computer.
That should give you a start.

    And welcome to our forums.

My dad uninstalled the motherboard and video card drivers. It seems to be better. Still not 100% but is like alot different. Before you could hear the menues but the picture took along time to come in and would be like still pictures. Like 5 frame per 10secs. Now its still weird, well see once all the drivers are installed again.

Both VLC and WinDVD play about the same. It is on Ultra-DMA setting.

Thank You for the welcom and I appreciate the help.

With Vista, video and audio drivers are a problem with some motherboards. Check the download page on your motherboards website. You might also try a driver from both the audio chipsets websites and the video cards website. ATI and Nvidia drivers that come with the motherboard may not be up to date or completely compatible with Vista.

I had better luck with the video drivers on the Vista OS disc than I did from the motherboard disc. Even the ones on the motherboard website were not as good as the ones directly from Nvidia.

Apparently when a motherboard is listed as 'Vista Certified' by the manufacturer, it doesn't seem to always mean it will come with the best drivers. At least mine wasn't.

I know from use that windvd is very unstable on vista. It came with my toshiba laptop and it plays vids very badly. Toshiba had a windvd patch on their site but that didn't help much.

Sorry I should have listed this, I am running Windows 2000 on that computer.

And I agree 100% WinDVD on vista is a joke!

Even with W2000 or XP, I would check for the latest drivers from the manufacturers sites. But in a few cases, the slightly older drivers may work better. It pays to look for user forums specific to the video and audio cards or chipsets to see what they might recommend.
