You won't get sensible advice unless you say where in the world you are.

They are selling these at my local ASDA-Wallmart here in UK. Actually its the Apex AD-1100WB. Reports are coming through that it doesn't play VCD or SVCD (yes, I know it's supposed to play everything). It does seem some manufacturers are being pressured to remove these capabilities. The same thing happened with the Pacific 750. I have an early one which plays VCD and SVCD(not perfectly), and the Macrovision could be disabled. Current versions have had the Macro hack removed, and (S)VCD playback disabled.

  5. if you're in the UK have a look at www.dvdmagic.net, they only stock the branded players, sony, pioneer, toshiba etc but you can pick one up fully modified from around £150 and they will give you advice as to which ones play what type of discs.

It makes sense to get a DVD player that plays what you actually want to watch. 8) Once you've seen a good SVCD it makes you less excited about VCD, although there is nothing wrong with VCD. Generally, the more you pay for a player, the less it actually plays! If you do want extra capabilities over and above DVD playing, then check out the player guide on this site. When I buy my next one I will only buy when the seller expressly guarantees the playback I want, or will be prepared to refund.

  8. I just picked up a Panasonic DVD/VCD/CDR/MP3/WMA 5-disk changer for US$150 from Best Buy and this baby replaced three racks of equipment. Highly recommend it. If you care, the model is DVD-CV52.

Apex disabled VCD capability on all their players manufactured after 15th April 2002, so they don't have to pay Philips a licence fee. Smart move by Apex, uh?
