  1. Hi guys, i hope i dont upset too many as im quite new to the forum, and there may have been this question answered in round about ways before. but ive been ripping for about 2 months. ive successfully achieved this with about 6 or 7 dvds so i sort of know what im doing. But my question is , why is it when converting from a dvd to a vcd, that the picture quality in some cases goes all 'blocky' if u know what i mean. its probably there all the time, but noticeable when for instance someone in the movie is standing against a plain coloured wall, or the scene is dark etc. im sure you all know what im talking about. is there a way of improving this.

i use smartripper, dvd2avi , tmpgenc and nero. Pc - Amd2000+ 512MB Ram. Also if there is another method, could u please tell me how much longer it adds to the process and if the software is hard to get. also is it freeware?

    thankyou for your help

  2. Since your target is a VCD, the knee-jerk reaction answer is to suggest you up your bitrate if your player can handle it, making it an xVCD. Normally, thowing more bits at it helps.

But then you were kind enough to descibe your methods. In the DVD2AVI step, what is the quality of the AVI you create? Are you using one of the typical compressors like InVideo or Microsoft? Or, did you select the uncompressed AVI format? I have used DVD2AVI ony once, and the resulting AVI was pretty bad unless the uncompressed option was used. This may cause your VCD compatible MPEG look pretty bad.

Personally, I still like DVDx. This is a single step program to go from VOB to MPEG. The quality probably isn't as good as you could get from a multi-step process, but it is real simple to use. And, likely to be better than DVD2AVI if a lossy compressor is used at high compression. Also, ReMPEG does a very good job, but it cannot convert to MPEG-1 for VCD use.
