  1. I have a Sony stand alone DVD player that is about 3 to 4 years old. It plays the VCDs I make with Nero just fine. But my sister has a Sony stand alone DVD player that is only about 1 to 2 years old and it won’t play them. Says “No Disk” Does anyone know why this is? Is there something besides Nero I can use so that they will play in both DVDs?

You dont say what your Sony models are, not all of them will play CD-R and not all will play VCD's.

Check the spec on the Sony players

    Sony NS300 , VCD but no CD-R

You also might want to try different brands of CD-R's
May the force be with you.

  4. The one that works fine is DVP- S300
The one that wont play them is DVP - S330

What is the difference in a VCD and a CD-R? Arnt they the same thing? I mean you make a VCD out of a CD-R no?

VCD's can be those you buy in a shop (Pressed) not ones you have made on a CDR/CDR-W

The problem is, if there is no Official support with the player, that could mean they may work, or they may not !

Sometimes a diffrent type have Media is needed... Maxell, TDK etc

""What is the difference in a VCD and a CD-R? Arnt they the same thing? I mean you make a VCD out of a CD-R no?""

1: VCD is a FORMAT, Video CD data format,

2: CD-R and CD-RW is a MEDIA type, recordable/rewriteable and has nothing to do with what is recorded on the media.

Best way to explain this is using a audio tape recorder as an example. a blank cassette tape is just that a shell with magnetic tape inside. It does not determine wheather you record mono or stereo or music or voice. while stereo and mono tapes can be played on a cassette player without worry about it being mono or stereo (standards at work) it does mater if you reocrd at other than standadr 1 7/8ips tape speed. IF you used a Tascam w double speed, you have to play it back on another deck that can play at double speed (3.75ips). likewise if you use a Sony portable with 1/2 speed record ability to record a voice meeeting it will not play back properly on a unit that can not play that 1/2 speed tape. It will play but at teh wrong speed.

Digital is not as forgiveing as analog.

When you talk about VCD's they could be commercially made disks, and can play on VCD players, or DVD players that support VCD's. But CDR's are not made the same way, so not all DVD players will play them.

The VCD format is not like any other data disk, it has 2 tracks, and is created with a VCD authoring program, not a data CD burning program.

Some DVD players will play CD-R some wont, some players will play CDR-W some wont. The process of making a CD-R (Burn) is not the same as making a CDR-W (Write)

VHS ? what the heck has that got to do with anything

I think you need to spend some time in the "Dreaded" help files on this forum

  8. Not sure if this is the player you have Sony NS300. It will play VCDs on CD-R - but it depends on media (CD-R) type/manufacturer.

I use Discrite swirls. Have a look at discrite.com (think). They are easy to get in the UK , not sure about elsewhere. Use Nero 5.5 and above and should work ok. Let us know how ya get on.

I will agree that some of these player may play VCD's made on CDR (with the right type of disk) however they officially don't so some of them will play them and some wont... I guess the firmware is different in newer models. I know this model well as a few people bought them (And exchanged them for the next model up)
