Hey guys,
Is there any reason why double sided CDRs are not popular? Why only double sided DVDs? I could probably get them at a Chinese mall near me, but for many people who can't speak Chinese, I suppose its more difficult.

They are probably not so popular because there is no room to write what is on the disk (remember trying to find a file on all your "unlabeled" floppies?).

silly rabbits...
you get a thermal printer that lets you print on the inner trim ring or just keep them in the cases.
Does anyone know if 8.5G DVD+R/RW will ever come out?r@yjr13 ¦-< what you lookin at¿ :o

I didn't think that they existed...
Can someone confirm this (e.g., buy it and post a picture here)?
Also, are they twice as thick as normal CD-Rs (which they would have to be unless some clever fellow's managed to change the refractive index of the substrate as well).

Yes, the actual business end of a cd-r is the underside of the top surface through the bottom plastic. It's actually more important to protect the top side of an unlabled cd-r than the bottom.
The bottom of a cd-r is not where the burning takes place, it takes place on the underside of the top surface. If you doubt this, then take an exacto knife to the underside of a cd-r, nothing will scrape off it's just plastic. Now take the exacto knife to the top surface and you will see it will scrape right off and you will be able to see right through the plastic.
So, how do you make a double-sided cd-r when the laser passes through the plastic to burn the material on the underside of the top surface?

About CDRs, Im not sure, but the reason why I asked is because Chinese stores have all sorts of CDR stuff in malls. They have 70 minute, 80 minute, 90 minute, 99 minute, mini-CDs, Busness card CDs, as well as special colored CDs (Black, White, Purple, Clear, Marble, ect) as well as special shaped CDs (Star shape, heart shaped, oval shaped, rectangle shaped). Nateraly I think they would also have double sided media as well.
Of course, it would probably be very non-standard when it comes to CDRs, but thats the same with most other products I can get in Chinese malls (Such as SNES Game Copiers, backup devices, ect). -
I read an article once where a company was developing disks where on one side you had say... a standard audio CD and on the other you had all the videos in DVD format...

Double sided DVDs definitely exist, though they are rarely in the Western world now that dual-layered DVDs are the norm. Some older releases are double sided though (e.g., R4 A Bug's Life, Gattaca, South Park (Movie) ). Dual-side recordable DVD media exists too.
All the other types of CDs you mentioned I've seen and they should most play in CD drives. However, you shouldn't assume that doubled sided discs exist. I don't think they do. As someone else mentioned, the actual recording layer (or data layer) of a CD is very close to the top of the disc. Thus, for a disc to be double sided, the resultant disc would be twice as thick, unless you somehow change the refractive index of the substrate. This is difficult.
Discs that are twice as thick as a normal disc have a good chance of not working on some players (physically won't fit) or could screw up other drives' mechanism. Either way, not a good idea.
