  1. I have several Mpeg movies at 720-750 mb and now want to put on cd in either VCD or svcd format for viewing on my stand alone dvd player (It supports both. When I try to do just a simple copy to cd using latest Nero, file to big. I tried to go to expert mode in nero and do a overburn and still wouldn't work. Question is, how do I make this work and can I use Nero still or do I need a different program. I am new to the forum and apologize in advance if this question has been ask and answered before.

If your using latest Nero...don't try to copy as a mpg.....
Click on VCD as the disk your making....Make sure you turn of standard compliancy check( unless u know the files ar standard VCD compliant)....then drag the mpg file over for Nero....I burn mpg that are 760-770mb to VCD all the time without overburning enabled.

  3. Absolutely. I burn non-compliant VCDs all the time to save copies of my favorite TV shows for later viewing. Naturally, I want the video quality to be as good as it can, but still fit a reasonable amount like 42 minutes on a CD.

I use Nero to burn VCD 2.0 - menu with a 640x480 jpg background and two 12-minute mpg's. By dint of hundreds of experiments, I found I can fit about 785 MB of mpg's (measured by control-clicking on both files in windows explorer) onto a 700 MB CD-R.

I did notice one little GOTCHA in the process, and it drove me crazy until I found the solution. You need to encode your mpg's into Video CD stream format. If you don't, Nero "expands" them by plugging in its own interblock padding (or whatever goes in VCD mpg's), and then it goes down to about 650 MB of mpg's per 700 MB CD-R.

Should this happen, you can "fix" wrongly encoded mpg's very easily and quickly using TMPGenc's MPEG Tools (file menu) Merge&Cut function. Just set up the old mpg file as input and a new one as output -- no need to actually merge or cut anything here -- and be sure to set the output format to Video CD System Stream. Hit the Run button, and a minute or two later you'll have an mpg that fits in a lot less space on the VCD.

  4. In addition to the above replies, even a compliant VCD will store an 800Mb mpg file on an 80 minute CD . The compliant/non-compliant issue just relates to the resolution etc of the mpg file not how much fit on a VCD

  5. I'm having the same exact problem.. I can only burn 701MB of MPEG1 on my disc in Nero's VCD mode, and VCDEasy bombs on my computer (well, not after using the ASPI force driver thingy but it still wouldn't write to the CD-R drive). I ran the freshly encoded MPEG1 file through TMPGEnc as MPEG 1 (automatic) simple multiplex, that made it quite a bit smaller, but still 701MB was the limit Nero would take. I have the latest version of Nero.

Would someone who can burn >700MB on a 80 minute disc be willing to make screenshots of all their Nero screens so I can closely compare all my settings to yours? I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks,

  6. calamari,
I have regularly written 770-790Mb on a VCD using Nero. Normally these consist of about 20 smaller mpeg1 files (encoded using TMPGEnc). I do not use any special settings in Nero, just straight VCD setting, all defaults (often I will turn the menu on but this makes no real difference). Once or twice I ahve written large single mpeg files > 700 Mb and also worked fine (this was maybe 6 months ago mind you). Using overburning I have written up to 810Mb to an 80 minute cd (in these cases3 episodes of Red Dwarf)

The multiplexing you describe I have never done this.

Question, is the file you encode using TMPGenc a standard VCD (ie using VCD(NTSC) or VCD(PAL) template?

  7. No it's xVCD because I lowered the bitrates so it would fit in 800MB:
    Video: MPEG-1 NTSC 320x240 23.976fps (film) 1000 kbit/sec
    Audio: MPEG-2 44,100Hz 128kbit/sec

I use Nero(5.5.6.4) and always burn non compliant VCD movies (up to 2 hours) on a single disc, the largest so far was 767mb (on a 80min 700mb CDR) with overburn disabled.
My Nero is stock, no changes in preferences...I'll post screen shots later:
I use VCD, uncheck compliant and CDI app.
    I use menu.
I check iso level 1 and iso 9660, UNcheck joliet.
I check write, finalize and disc at once. ANd lately I burn at 2X, i can burn faster but 2X has never had errors on me.

  9. I really think calamari is having the same problem I did - nero's expanding the MPEG-1 file because it's not formatted for VCD. There's a difference between regular MPEG-1 for PCs and MPEG-1 for Video CDs. Something about intrablock bumpers or something like that. I'm no expert, but I can tell you, Nero will add a lot of data to your file if it doesn't detect "Video CD System Stream" in the file's MPEG-1 headers.

Calamari, just try what I did - use TMGPenc tools Merge&Cut to demux/remux your file into a new .mpg , and change the type from "MPEG-1 Standard" to "MPEG-1 Video CD". That made a 150MB difference in the amount of data I was able to burn using Nero with its standard VCD settings.

The only changes I make from the Nero defaults are to uncheck "Create standard compliant CD" on the "Video CD" tab (I don't want Nero complaining about the bitrate), check "Enable menu" on the menu tab and set that up, and check "Finalize" if it's not already checked on the Burn tab. If you have only one file, you don't need the menu.

Try the merge&cut, I think that will take care of your problem.
