    Having installed KSCodecs DivX 3.11 4 & 5, I have still got a AVI file that is refussing to be played "As it isn't supported". Yet I can play other AVI files.

    Does anybody know where I'm going wrong?

    Arrgh

    What is (if available) the FOURCC (as seen with VDub dump option) of the avi?

    Have you tried to open the file in hex-mode (dump) with VDup?
    You can have a look at the header (if it's a valid avi) and see the FOURCC.

    Try right click > Properties Does it show its file type.

    Quite a lot of files out there are fake ! Even if it wont play you should still be able to tell its codec.

    Search my other posts, they have a lot of info about this.

    Ok then, cooking on calour

    I have looked at the hex code and there is no codec information at the top of the film.

    Is there a way of telling the file to use a certain codec (Getting desperate now)

    If not BUGGER

    if you don't see the RIFF structure, than it's maybe a mpg file (no eligable structure here).

    Ok, I'll change the extension to an mpg and see how I go, but the file size doesn't look like it is mpg as it only 213M for disc one of Spiderman.

    I'm beginning to think I have downloaded a dudd file.

    with such size, I'd suggest it might be an asf file.But an asf will be played with windows media player.

    Ok, I'll try asf first. I'd have thought it would only play if the extension was asf or correct, and not an asf disquised by someone as an avi.

    Is there any way telling looking at the hex? The trouble is I don't know what I'm looking at.

    Sorry for being at pain

    Thanks for the help

    The mpg file header (I haven't had a look at asf yet) is binary only.You can find a description at msdn (microsoft developers network) library online.for mpeg-2 it looks something like this:

    typedef struct tagMPEG2VIDEOINFO {
    VIDEOINFOHEADER2 hdr;
    DWORD dwStartTimeCode;
    DWORD cbSequenceHeader;
    DWORD dwProfile;
    DWORD dwLevel;
    DWORD dwFlags;
    DWORD dwSequenceHeader[1];
    } MPEG2VIDEOINFO;

    typedef struct tagVIDEOINFOHEADER2 {
    RECT rcSource;
    RECT rcTarget;
    DWORD dwBitRate;
    DWORD dwBitErrorRate;
    REFERENCE_TIME AvgTimePerFrame;
    DWORD dwInterlaceFlags;
    DWORD dwCopyProtectFlags;
    DWORD dwPictAspectRatioX;
    DWORD dwPictAspectRatioY;
    DWORD dwReserved1;
    DWORD dwReserved2;
    BITMAPINFOHEADER bmiHeader;
    } VIDEOINFOHEADER2;

    If you want more info, I suggest start reading here:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dshow/htm/mpeg2videoi...ostructure.asp
    But I think this is more than you ever wanted to know.
    I found once a program which could interpret such stuff, but didn*'t work with asf.info on asf is here:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dx8_c/directx_cpp/htm...iterfilter.asp

    I loaded that on after the other standard divX codecs.

    Thanks

  15. I believe Virtual Dub version 1.3C will handle asf files, where the newer versions of Virtual Dub do not. You might also need the ac3 codec. It would possibly help with the sound.

    Don't forget NOT to install the Angel Potion (SMR)

    SMR is yet another version of the MS Mpeg-4 V3 codec, that someone modified to look original. The DLL that comes with Angel Potion is full of bugs. See Vdub FRQ....

    What is this AVI ?, Begining to think its FAKE
