In the latest Tigerdirect catalog, I see there are two new mpeg-2 DVD capture devices, both priced around $200.
First, a new device from Dazzle, the Dazzle Creation Station 200. Second, a new device from Pinnacle, the Bungee DVD. Both are external mpeg-2 capture and playback devices made for making VCD, SVCD and DVD's. The connection to the PC seems to be USB.
If someone goes for one, plese write a review on the units.

I read a basic summary of the Dazzle machine over at http://www.stop.at/dazzle2. The person bought it from circuit city, which has a good option. 30 day return policy. He said the software was garbage. Which coming from Dazzles no surprise. Tech TV said the Pinnacle was OK but had some software problems. Like a very slow tuner. Something along the lines of several seconds to change each channel. So if you had 20 channels between where your are, and where you need to be, it might take several minutes.

The speed of most external USB devices are very slow. I wonder why they don't use Firewire? That would increase the bit rate to full DVD specs, and make the device respond much faster to commands like changing the channel.

Firewire would be a welcome change. I don't have anything that will do usb2 yet. But firewire I could use. And best of all it actually works.
