Transitions?

I am trying to make transitions but it just won't work as shown in the manual. Example? Sure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DY6Lf8Ezfs right after second 34

Originally, these were 2 1-min clips from my dashcams, that I managed to join (after doing the pic-in-pic). Then, my intention was to cut out about half a minute (half into the new clip) and make a transition, in order to spare viewers my waiting time for the oncoming traffic. Then, I wanted to shorten it at the beginning and the end, such that the resulting clip again would be about a minute long.

So far so good (?), although after much quivering - with the exception of the cut/transition part: Nothing happened there (see right after second 34), despite my best attempts. Although I somehow was lucky this time, the result could have come out worse.

Could someone help me with an absolutely fool-proof how-to, step-by-step, re the cut/transition part? Whatever I find on the internet seems to assume that the readers already know much of it, thus not mentioning essential things, as it seems to me.
