  1. Hi there!
I have done my side of research but was hoping to get any feedback and info that I might have overlooked or missed. I am trying to create a whole new workflow/station of digitizing old media but at the highest quality possible all while in the most time efficient manner possible. I need to be able to digitize: VHS, VHS-C, S-VHS, Hi-8, Video8, Digital 8, MiniDV and BetaMax. I already have a ton of equipment but am having a bit trouble finding the "best" method in terms of the hardware (capture cards) and the best software to use. My current workflow is outdated and slow. Am using A/D converter and firewire capture card with Cyberlink then encoding after. I have a new workflow in process using OBS with deinterlacing while capturing but i feel it could be much better. If anyone has any tips or recommendations I would greatly appreciate it!

(P.S. Yes, I have read and came across very helpful guides but just creating this thread for hopefully spark any useful conversations or discussions to prevent time wasting of anything that would deter my process, thanks!)

There are tons of threads with the exact same question in the capturing section, just read few and come back with specific questions.

  4. Okay so here is what I am curious about. In theory if I used a analog to digital upscaler / capture card all in one (ex: clearclick video2usb 1080p) would that device be that much worse off than using the traditional analog to digital and longer chain of devices / processes? If the upscaler supports my inputs, has different resolution options, and can capture say via OBS directly to Mp4 with their de-interlacing feature. I think I am going to test this but want any obvious things that i am overlooking if missing that are crucial or red flags to this concept idea. Thanks!

Yes it will be that much worse, Capturing analog video has one resolution only for a given standard, You need to do a lot of reading, tons of threads discussing a proper way to capture analog video.

  6. I have done SO much reading haha and basically knew that was a far shot idea but worth asking. I am trying to essentially cut our encoding process out or time way down somehow. Currently am using a ADVC110- then to firewire capture, but would love a way to capture directly to MP4 with deinterlacing. After all my research I am understanding how crucial it is to keep the analog signal clean and proper flow to capture correctly. If you have any big pointers or advice that would be cool.

    Depends.

There are better boxes and there are crappy ones. 12voltvids likes his box. He claims it encodes 4:3 into 4:3 HD frame, which I find hard to believe, but that's what he says. On another hand, he says that another box that converts to 30p and stretches 4:3 to 16:9 is a "good option", I think it is a piece of garbage. It is helpful that he provided test footage, so you can judge for yourself.
