How about reading these:

Basically, it's a waste of time... You can get a card with a TV-out for much cheaper that will play anything you throw at it, and without any reencoding or anything. Or read all these posts we keep getting about this so-said "miracle" player.
-
You might want to wait before buying that player.
It's powered by a derivative of the same Sigma designs chip that powered the Xcard. That particular card/chipset has serious problems decoding Divx--it won't decode the "unauthorized" versions (3.11), and supposedly, it has a hard time with the legal versions as well.
There have been so many bad things said about the card that it might behoove you to wait to see what people say about the player, since it works off the same chipset, which many believe was the root of the problem.
I'm going to hold out until one of the majors announces an MPEG-4-compatible player. Supposedly, that's where they're trying to move the DVD spec anyway--towards blue-laser for HD DVDs and red-laser MPEG-4 for standard-def DVDs. -

Of course, part of the problem could be because of the lack of standardisation or the lack of following of standards when people create their "DivX" movies. It's pretty hard for a hardware decoder to playback everything.

Yes, as virtualis said, no one has thought about creating a standard
yet. Everyone is TOO busy trying cram so much into a one-cd media,
that no kind of effort is actually taking place.
If anyone is ademit about getting one, they they better be expecting
to be DOING THEIR OWN divX encode, in order for it to work right.
And, top it off with.. the fact that you will probably have to work
out the kinks and quality issues in your first few weeks or months
experience. I can bet safely, that when you first SEE a few divX
samples play in any one of these devices, that you'll think it was
so cool and right away, think that the quality is great. And, finally,
later on, you'll begin to see that you were wrong about the quality..
..right after the FOG lifts. Then, you'll begin the search and
destroy mission of finding the right enocding method that will yield
good or great looking results.
Again, a standard has to be made, just like there is for VCD and SVCD,
etc. Remember, that although ie, VCD was made a standard way back
when, the resolution, bitrate, etc. was asseptable at the time, since
no one really new what quality they could squeez out of CD media, like
they do with today's video arenea. So, with that in mind, when a set
standard is made, things like comprimises will be required and made
for the sake of standard (just like they did with VCD, etc) and things
like bitrate and resolution, letterbox and the like will all be factored
into this new agreed upon standard. And, there may be disagreement on
some issues, but the standard will hold, and peoples out their can
begin to use them (or not) and Manufactuers will implement them in their
units, etc.
But, a standard is so important. Its not something to take litely.
Else, how are the manufactuers soppose to create devices to play these
divX formats ?? Forget about, I want to make my own format. I wanna
this.. I wanna that.. You can still do it, but if a set standard is
agreed upon, and implemented into these newer set tops, then expect
for YOUR divX encoding formats to NOT play in them. There must be some
restrictions when making a standard format for divX players. Just as
VCDs that are "X"'ed may or may not play in a given player, or may
play, but with some glitches, etc.
Also, if such a standard could come about, then you'll start to see
some players show up on the shelves, and perhaps even some divX movie
titles (or not)
But, factor this in as well, when you're thinking/contemplating why
aren't they making any standards or players that plays divX?? .. ..
.. ..You are asking a consortium to take what was or is based on an
patended format, which was hacked at one time, and (so they say)
re-buildt from bottom up, to NOW create a player based on this ??
It's like a slap in the face. I don't think it will be easy, if you
understand what I'm saying. This divX started on a hacked (stolen
patend) and now you are desiring for those that are aware of this to
create openly, a standard.. again, a slap in the face. If you get my
meaning?? Again, the name divX, divX, divX, is STILL being use as a
name (format) weather in the old v3.11 or to date, the new v5.0.2 is
still using the name divX - an open slap in the face. Who cares if
they say it a rebuild or resign from the bottom up. Hogwash. It all
started from v3.11 or so, and the divX name is STILL being used through
out all the others. You can't help but to wonder why?? ..if they are
claiming that the newer ones are or have no reference to the old.
Come on, wake up. anyways, I'm not trying to start an argument on this
null issue. I'm just trying to show you how hard it is for the police
to agree on something like this.
I'm not a divX fan, but I'm not afraid to admit that I"ve ben playing
around with it for some time now. I'm also not hoping for anything much
from this format, even if their is in the future. I'm just saying that
it's problably something to think about, when you're trying to reason
out whey there is no standard yet. My guess is that things have to
be ironed out. So, maybe one should expect some changes to take place
in the comming months, if this IS to become a reality.
well, that's all I have ta say for now.

So, just a Toshiba form factor IDE loader that needs making into RPC1 -
Every time we don't hear about this piece of sh... for more than 2 days in a row, I start hoping it's dead, but this thread always makes it's way back up. I almost like "what's the best capture card?"-revisited type of threads better. This player is useless, who even cares if the damn thing has a RPC1 drive in it, as if you buy this instead of another DVD player, really, it's for the DivX playback, which is total rubbish.
