    Hi there,

I created a backup named holiday.avi, created with mencoder using Linux. It is about 3 GB in size, uses mp3 audio and Divx5 video.

I burnt it on a DVD+R to watch it on TV using a Philips DVD737 player with the latest firmware. The funny thing is, this player recognizes very well the 3 GB avi file and perfectly plays the first 34 minutes, but then suddenly stops and jumps to the player's main menu...

Interesting is that the whole film is recognizes as a 34 minutes long chapter... What went wrong? I can play the whole avi on the computer... Actually the "chapter" which is a single film is 1h:40m long, but the standalone player says it has 34 minutes...

So the Philips can see the 3 GB file size, but it wrongly sees the actual length of the film.

Has someone a hint for me?

    Thanks!

It's a relatively old player, and not ultra certified. While it might recognise that the file is present, I suspect it cannot read the file all the way through because it is larger than 2 GB. I would try splitting the file and see if it reads further.

Ok,I'll try that. Another thing is, sometimes when jumping to a certain scene by giving the exact position, e.g. 00h:12m:00s the player jumps there but afterwards skips some frames and needs some time to "calm down" and this makes me wonder whether it could also be a bad DVD... ok, will try to exclude all these things.

Possibly, although you also have to remember that Divx/Xvid often use very long GOPs - up to 300 frames. What you are probably seeing is the payer trying to catch up with the GOP it has landed in the middle of to reconstruct the frame for display. How well it does this varies from player to player, and my brief googling earlier showed a lot of owners not very happy with the quality of this player.

The player may recognize the avi file but it won't play anything past the 2 GB limit.

I start to understand...I think it has to do with the lack of UDF support? UDF is needed for files > 2 GB on optical media, no UDF, no large files...

Even if you do burn with UDF support, th eplayer still has a 2 GB file size limit.

I've split now the movie into two chunks and it works now. Where does this 2 GB limitation come from? Is this a DivX or AVI issue? Can new DVD player play such long films without splitting them?
