I need a piece of free/shareware to do some rendering of movies I am editing. My guess is that i Need a rendering tool besides premiere pro (I keep getting a unsupported compression type- I dont know what to do about this!) . I would like to find a piece of share/freeware to take the ads out of these! can you think of one that is easier than premiere? John

As far as free goes, Avidemux is probably the easiest option for quick editing of H.264 video. It can only cut on I-frames so you usually won't be able to cut on the exact frame you want. Avidemux has been know to be buggy along with sync drifts are possible. So check the output before throwing away your source.

The other option would be to use MKVmerge, which is also free and can losslessly cut up H.264 and H.265 video files. You have to know the timecodes or frame numbers that you want to cut on which makes the process time consuming, but I've never found the MKVmerge experence buggy when doing this. As before, it will only cut on I-frames so cuts won't be exact.

For exact cuts I would suggest Videoredo. This option is not free but can do smart cutting which only re-encodes a few frames around each cut and is an easy experience. It does not support MKV so you would have to remux to a .TS or maybe .MP4 for it to accept the file for editing.
