New Computer, new device? Do I need to replace my Canopus ADVC-100?

Apologies, I'm sure this forum is inundated with these posts - and I've browsed a few.

So I currently have a PC that's on it's way out and am already building a new one, and as such, there will be no firewire port. I'm going for a smaller form factor, so there just aren't the extra expansion slots on the board I bought.

I have an ADVC-100 and it's always been great. Plays well with Premiere which I capture into directly so I can trim, filter, etc. What I'm wondering is - will a simple convertor to usb still allow it to work, I feel like I've read that there can be issues and it's not guaranteed?

At $6 i'll try one out, but if not - what's a good replacement device? I don't need to capture HDMI - I'm only converting old vhs tapes - but i also may rent a multi-vcr to digitize some PAL tapes as well, so I'd want to make sure there's no issues - and I don't need any software - I just want to capture lossless directly into Premiere.

Did you read the reviews on that converter? It may well be a scam — the conductors are connected but there is no circuitry to convert the signal. You will be better off installing a 1394 expansion card in your new PC.

Thanks, there isn't going to be room for a card. And if those are scams, then i guess new hardware will be needed.

What about a firewire 400 to 800 convertor, then using a firewire 800 to usb cable? is that ridiculous?

Even if that converter is not a scam then it will be useless for a ADVC. Same goes for that idea about firewire to usb cable.

For your purpose Premiere requires a DV stream and you only get that with a 1394 port.

There are plenty of usb capture devices out there. The issue generally is not the device but proper drivers for your OS since many have little support beyond WinXP.

You could always try one of these $10 'easycrap' since it might work for you. Otherwise it's a EZCap116 which is the official, now renamed, easycap or a Hauppuage Usb Live 2

But why no expansion slot for the new PC ? Even small format mainboards will have at least one.

If you're planning on using it for video work then why on earth are you going smaller? Lower rated power supplies, fewer SATA ports, fewer expansion slots, less space for heatsinks & cooling fans and poorer airflow. . . why? Stick the box behind the screen, or tuck it away behind a board painted or papered like the wall behind it if you must. Or just keep the old PC (or buy a 2nd hand one for a few quid) for capture.

If you go down the USB capture device then I'd recommend the Hauppauge Live2 and use AmarecTV for capture. (v3.10 is available if you hunt on the Japanese site. Don't bother with anything above v3.10 as you'll HAVE to use their proprietory codec.) Have Fun!
