Can DVD's be copied like cds with a DVD-r/w or +r/w?

I was curious about this. I know theres a lot of copy protection stuff on DVDs that cds dont have. So if i got a dvd burner, would it do this?

Yes, but to a degree.


1.) Most DVD's are 9.4 gigs, while home DVD recorders only have 4.6 gig disks.

2.) You can never make a 1:1 copy.


A.) Rip the DVD, removing the macrovision and region protection.

B.) Demux the vob files

C.) Feed the mpeg files from the vob into authoring software

actually Greg, 90% true.

I have a couple of far Eastern discs which are single sided and not copy protected. 1:1 copying worked fine. They were pressed commercial releases too.

However, as Greg said, the vast majority of commercial DVDs are dual layer 9.4Gbs so you cannot do a 1:1 copy. If you do come across any commercial DVDs that are only single layer chances are they will be copy protected so again, you cannot do a 1:1 copy.
