I am using a Windows 10 Dell Inspiron computer with 8GB RAM, and I have never had a problem using VirtualDub until today. The problem started after a Windows 10 update. VirtualDub was able to capture AVI files but when it did it would make the video file size really small, with a resulting 33 MB AVI file. I was capturing using these settings: 640x480, YUY2, (No recompression: YUY2), Direct Stream Copy for both video and audio. When I played the AVI file, all I got was audio and the video was a blank screen.

I have noticed that during video capture, it is only capturing video with a 6KB/s data rate and that the compression ratio is 3416.0:1. That doesn't make sense to me given the fact that I am capturing without compression.

Last night, I was able to see video preview while VirtualDub was capturing but today all I get is a white screen. So, I have no idea what's wrong. Could it be that a driver became corrupted during the Windows update? If so, how do I go about finding out what driver became corrupted and fix the problem?

EDIT: I have been using VirtualDub to capture VHS tapes. The device I'm using is a USB2.0 Vidbox NW03 (DirectShow). I have also been using this device to capture VHS tapes using the Honestech VHS to DVD 5.0 Deluxe program, but I've preferred to use VirtualDub given that the resulting AVI has (until now) provided superior image quality. I haven't had any problems getting video or sound from Honestech while this problem with VirtualDub goes on, which makes this whole problem so puzzling to me.

A Windows 10 update might well break older software like Virtualdub that have not had a new release in a few years, as well as some codecs which are no longer maintained. While Virtualdub's developer reported that it works for him using Windows 10, some codecs which were used with it in the past are known not to work with Windows 10.

If Honestech works, I don't think the drivers are corrupt. I would try uninstalling an re-installing Virtualdub. ...but this could just as well be a codec problem. I'm not sure how to track those down, as I have never needed to do that.

I set my PC back to before the updates and now I have VirtualDub functioning properly again. So, if you have Windows 10 and you've just lost the ability to capture using VirtualDub, you know what to do to fix it. Just go into Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Go back to an early build and hit the Get Started button.

I've changed this post about three times now, my apologies. I just want to be sure I'm giving you accurate information so that you don't run into the same problems.

To the best of my knowledge, because I didn't bother to see which OS Build of Windows 10 I had been using when the problems occurred, the most recent build of Windows 10 was OS Build 14393.351 Version 1607 released on October 27th, 2016. The one that I've rolled back to is Version 1511 OS Build 10586.633 and that allows me to use VDub. If you're using the most recent build of Windows 10 and you decide to roll back to a previous build, you might wind up with Version 1511. Whether or not either one of these Windows 10 builds were the AU, I have no idea.

Windows 10 Version 1607 is the Anniversary Update.

  7. I imagine these sort of problems are going to get more prevalent with legacy programs like vdub. You might try capturing using AmarecTV as it has a W8 build (version 4.xx) although I haven't tried that version, and it supposedly has different menus. Also, how are you avoiding the infamous audio sync problem that everyone reports when capturing with vdub?
