I'm struggling with the same problem as many others. I finally found AC3.vdplugin which I copied to VirtualDubs plugins32 folder and thought that this would cure the problem but it didn't. It says in a text file that it should be a .vdf plugin file. Where can I find it?

"AC3.vdplugin" allows VirtualDub to *import* an AC3 stream for muxing it into a new AVI file.
What you're looking for is the AC3 ACM codec.

P.S.: FWIW, AC3Filter also includes an AC3&DTS ACM decompressor.

A .vdf is normally a filter file. Audio codecs go to a different location that are accessible by all programs, AFAIK.

    Try AC3 ACM Codec.

I installed the AC3 ACM codec but I still get the error 'no audio decompressor could be found ... (source format tag 00ff)

TwoCC 0x00ff means AAC. Then you need the AAC ACM codec.
You'd better always check your media files with MediaInfo, before posting questions
