'no audio decompressor found' happens when trying to play mkv and mp4 files in Virtual Dub. Also, avi that has been converted from mp4 in AVS4you will not play in Virtual Dub. What do I need, please?

  2. If you don't have any luck, try opening an MKV/MP4 with MediaInfo and posting details regarding what's inside, but the VirtualDub page on this site has a list of Virtualdub import plugins/filters. Try downloading the appropriate filters, stick them in the plugins folder and restart VirtualDub. The fcchandler plugins seem to work best, although the raythe0n FFMEGInput plugin is very good for open lots of video types (not sure about audio).

What happens when you try to open the AVI in question? Do you get any errors?

Also what are you trying to achieve? I ask as there may be a better method than VirtualDub, depending on what you're doing.

No, no errors in opening, just playing. VDub will not allow playing if no audio decompressor is found, unless I choose 'no audio'. I want to edit using audio events in a video. MKV, MP4 and some AVI in Virtual Dub will not allow playback with audio..

I don't seem to be having luck using Google to get an audio codec for what I've described. I'll look over your reply again and try searching.

The reason I need the audio playback is to advance to a particular audio event in the loaded video in Virtual Dub. I need to mark 'end' then delete previous frames. Likewise, I need to find a further audio event, mark that as 'start', and delete all frames after it. If I could do that, I'd have my clip with my audio beginning and ending cues. With no sound, obviously, can't do that. The solution, a poor one, is to play the video in a player, note the key times in the running counter because I can hear what's going on, and then use that as my times in the Virtual Dub running counter when editing.

    Thanks for your reply.
