Looking for some help using a MAC as an ftp server. Most vcds nowadays are available by having someone FXP them to you. Being on a Mac, I've tried using server software like Rumpus, NetPresenz, CrushFTP, you name it. I like to think I'm quite computer literate, so I have no idea why I can't get this working. No matter what program I use, the person doing the FXP'ing can't seem to start an upload.

Are there some programs others have been using with better results that I haven't tried?

    Any help would be appreciated.

are you connecting to the other person's ftp server?

does the other person even have a server running.

As I understand, you must connect to a FTP server and download from there.

muttonhead, why don't you just simply use point 2 point with one of the instant messengers. All of the messengers today have a file transfer option.

Thanks for the responses. I think there's a little confusion though. Keep in mind that the user is sending the files to me, not the other way around. So I'm running an FTP server - not a client.

That's the issue. I need a Mac FTP server app that will accept files from an app called FXP (that's what the guy called it).

Keep those responses coming! I know we'll find an answer soon.

muttonhead, no offence, but you need to have a better understanding of networking before setting up an ftp server. There are many security issues in doing that. FXP is just a client program for File Transfer Protocol (FTP) any number of programs can be clients, but they can only communicate with servers. A client cannot communicate with another client. If you are trying to set up an ftp server i suggest you just pick one particular package (Rumpus for example) and concentrate on it. You may have a firewall issue where you need to pinhole or map a particular port to your mac. You may have a router that this needs to be done with. On a side note, unless you trust this person that is trying to upload a file to you, i wouldn't give them access. Most vcd's and video files are traded over irc or one of the many file sharing utilities. be very careful.....
