I'm converting my DVD's using Flask.

I read somewhere that 23.97 (FILM) is visually smoother than 29.97.
    Can this be true?

Doesn't it make sense that more frames per second would give better results?

    Please help
    Thanks

  2. Yes it makes sense but is generally not true, like so many things.
The reason is that many movies which display at 30fps were originally shot at 24, and false or duplicate frames are inserted to acheive 30fps.
Read up on TELECINING. By reducing the material to 24 fps (IVTC), this allows the bitrate to be spread over fewer frames for better quality. Inserting a pulldown flag will cause your player to again telecine the movie to 30fps, which is a US broadcast standard.

Exactly, regardless of how you encode your movies if your watching it on an ntsc television than it has to be played at 29.97fps.

The only place your going to actually see film being played at 24fps is at the movie theatres and as Nelson37 pointed out, film is shot at 24fps so it looks quite natural when played back at that speed.

Thanks for the info guys (and/or gals),

I wasn't really concerned with how fast it plays back, I just couldn't figure out why encoding at 29.97fps would cause my VCD's to jitter, however I have been smartened up.

    Thanks for all the help.
