Hello All!
I was wondering if anyone has had luck using the Verbatim DVD+R media with the Sony DRU500A. With this burner I have no problems burning video projects on the Sony DVD+RW disc. However, when I burn the same project onto the Verbatim disc, it just burns a coaster. I guess I'll have to try using some other media
What DVD media has been successful for you using the same burner?
thanks,

I would kind of like to know the answer to the same question as I have had no luck burning ANY DVD-R media with this recorder....
-
I have burnt about 8 Verbatim DVD+R 2.4x media with no problems what so ever. Verbatim's DVD-R is another story... Enclosed with my burner was a notice to not use any of the 2x Verbatim DVD-R media until after November 1, 2002. Well hope this helps.

Hello-I burned a FujiFilm DVD+RW, no problem, have not tried FujiFilm DVD+R. I bought them as a package deal at Best Buy. I also had the notice about Verbatim 2X DVD media, which was also available at Best Buy. Some of the MPEG 2 video files generated by other programs have not worked for me in MyDVD. Still checking it out....

Update - I was able to burn a video .iso image on a Verbatim disk using the included software that came with the Sony DRU500A -> Veritas RecordNow. Works just fine in the DVD-ROM of my computer but doesn't playback in my stand alone Toshiba SD6200 player ... aaarrrrggghhh!!
I figured that would probably happen, considering I bought that DVD player a little over 2 years ago. -
Another Update: Since I'm guesing that my stand alone player probably won't read DVD+R, I've decided to use the remainder of the Verbatim DVD+R discs for data back up. I really won't have any problems finding data to put on them
So far, every burn has been successful.
I went out and picked up a 5 pack of Memorex DVD-R (Part # 3202-5510) and successfully burned another movie using the Sony DRU500A. The real test was seeing if it would play in my Toshiba SD6200 ... Success!! Plays just fine
I guess it's not always the media that counts. Using the RecordNow software has really made a difference. -
Yep. Nero doesn't fully support DRU500A. I tried to burn VIDEO_TS folder and AUDIO_TS with test burning but it failed with DVD-R and DVD+R during burn test. I got memorex media.

So far I've had success with:
TDK DVD-R (2x)
TDK DVD-RW
TDK DVD+RW
Sony DVD+RW (came with DRU500A)
CompUSA DVD-R (1X... It was slow...)
Meritline DVD+RW
Meritline DVD+R
The only time I had a problem was with
TDK DVD+R. It burned without a problem but
would not play back in anything - even the DRU500A
itself. This may be the fault of the burning program though.
I 'THINK' I used Ulead DVD Movie Factory to burn it. Can't remember.
I found out there was a patch for it to burn DVD+R discs properly...
I'm assuming that's what happened. Course I till woudn't buy any
TDK DVD+R discs... The Meritline ones are much cheaper... -
Hello all, just bought the DRU500A this week and have burned the following without any problems.
Sony DVD+Rw thru DVD Workshop
about 5 Meritline DVD-R thru Nero 5.5.9.14 (.iso created by DVD Workshop)
1 Apple DVD-R (burned at 2x) in Nero from the .iso
I have a TDK DVD-R and DVD+R that I have not tested yet.

The media/software I have used so far with my Sony DRU500a:
-Sony +RW (came with drive): works fine after several burns.
-TDK +RW: works fine after several burns.
-Sony +R: Only worked with Record Now, NERO .15 failed at the
end of disk, it wrote 100% then failed.
-Philips +R: Worked with record now, I did not test with NERO .15.
-Imation 2x -R: Worked fine with record now, NERO .15 locked up
as I went to burn, but did not write to disk.
I did not try a -RW, and probably never will as +RWs (2.4x) are working fine.
I have not tried a CDR yet, will try that tonight.
It seems NERO .15 is not setup to handle write once media yet, just
a guess based on my testing.
I have a "sample" pack of cheaper -R media in the mail will post
results when I get them.
The DRU500a installed first time and has been working perfectly.
So far I am happy with the drive, I purchased it at compusa for
$350 (ouch) after Dell pushed my order back to 11/29. I wanted
to start using it now as this is my first DVD writer. I plan to
put it in an external case soon.
Will post more results as I get them.... -
I found this info today on the web, if it helps!
Verbatim DVD-Rs Incompatible With Sony DRU-500A DVD Writer! Posted Saturday, 26 October, 2002 by kila_m
Thanks to the guys in the forum (http://www.dvdwriters.co.uk/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?s=3dbb1ec90b02ffff;act=ST;f=1;t=98) -
We find the new Sony DRU-500A isn't all it's cracked up to be, first Mitsubishi released a statement of incompatbility and now Verbatim issue a warning:
"We are aware of lack of compatibility between some Verbatim branded 2X speed DVD-R discs and the new Sony DRU500A DVD writer. This incompatibility can cause write errors on the drive when using some 2X DVD-R media manufactured at our Singapore factory between May and August of 2002.
This incompatibility is isolated to the new Sony drive. Verbatim brand 2XDVD-R discs are fully compatible with all other DVD-R drives and video recorders in the market, including those sold by Pioneer, Apple, Sony, Compaq, Panasonic, Cendyne and other manufacturers.
The problem was corrected as soon as it was identified in engineering verification tests, so that all Verbatim 2X speed DVD-R discs being sold into our sales channels are now fully compatible with the Sony DRU500A. Other Verbatim DVD media, including DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD+R, 4X speed DVD-R, as well as most 2X speed DVD-R discs are not affected by this issue and are fully compatible with the Sony DRU500A.
If you have a DRU400A drive and wish to use Verbatim recordable media in that drive, we recommend use of the DVD+R 2.4X speed media or the new 4X DVD-R media which will be available in the US and Canada from December 2002.
Every effort has been made to purge non-compatible DVD-R media inventory from Verbatim's retailers and distributors. Verbatim will replace any non-compatible media at no cost to you. In the US and Canada please contact Verbatim technical support preferable by e-mail to techsupport@verbatim.com or by calling 1-800-538-8589 between the hours of 10.00am and 4.00pm EST. We will quickly issue a return authorization number and send you replacement product."
[ Hmm I wonder what the Sony DRU-400A is ? ] -
Incedently, Mitsubishi and Verbatim are the same, Verbatim is a subsidary of Mitsubishi, and its the name they sell under in the US, in Japan they're sold under Mitsubishi.
-
Hello-I know there are electronic devices manufactured by Japanese companies only for Far East markets. Perhaps the DRU 400A is one of these market-specific items.
-
DRU400A may have been a misprint on thier part as its not even listed on the japan sony web sites or on the channel sites for far east ..

I have had no luck with the Fuji DVD+R media. 2 bad burns and I returned the 5-pack to BestBuy which they took back with no problem. I picked up a 10-pack of Memorex DVD-R (1X) and they work perfectly in my 3 standalone players, Apex 1100W, Apex 500W, JVC XV-9500. I use Gear Pro to burn.
