Previewing partial (.avi) movies from kazaa

I've been downloading an avi movie these last couple days (56k connection) with kazaa and would like to preview it. kazaa's theatre doesn't support avi files, windows media player gives me this "unable to download an approiate decompressor." and powerdvd gives me an error. the only thing I can do is listen to the audio in windows media player, but I'd like to watch part of the movie as well. is there a codec I need or a program to download so that I can watch this movie? thanks.
