    Hi,
I've been trying to convert a avi movie that has external subs (.idx and .sub). I want to add one of these files (i've tried both) to the video. Everytime i preview i get this message after closing the preview window:

FIXME:Hardenabling SSE and SSE2 without detection
/Users/luisaguirre/.spumux/Arial.ttf doesn't look like a font description, ignoring.
    Cannot load font: /Users/luisaguirre/.spumux/Arial.ttf
    No matching VOBSUB language found!
SUB: Could not determine file format
Cannot load subtitles: /Users/luisaguirre/Downloads/House Of Flying Daggers(XviD)/DVD_VIDEO.sub
SUB: Could not determine file format

MPlayer interrupted by signal 11 in module: uninit_vo
    - MPlayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM.
Recompile MPlayer with --enable-debug and make a 'gdb' backtrace and
    disassembly. Details in DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports_what.html#bugreports_crash.
    - MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen.
It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your
gcc version. If you think it's MPlayer's fault, please read
DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. We can't and
won't help unless you provide this information when reporting a possible bug.

The subtitles show up on the preview, but not on the final converted movie, not even the option to choose to turn subs on (tried this too on VLC media player). I've followed instructions from ffmpegx but won't work. Could any one help me please? Thanks lot.

    Luis

Don't close the mplayer window, but quit the mplayer viewer program using the proper keys: [q] or [ESC]. (Not very Mac-like, but this mplayer incarnation was not developed with normal Mac GUI interface in mind.)

You can search for a matching .srt file (text based) instead of using the idx/sub pair (image based), as ffmpegX wants text based subtitles as external subtitle file.
Or you can do the MKV route that BeardFan found (making the subtitles internal and usable like DVD source subtitles).
Or you can encode to DVD using the DVD mpeg2enc preset with Decode with mplayer activated. That seems to be the only setting that supports idx/sub for input in ffmpegX.
