right now my video has a unusual framerate and I want to convert it into 29.97 proper.

I tried the virtual dub way, but the conversion was wrong and I couldn't merge this video segment with proper 29.97 videos.

h264 avi with mp3 audio, how do I convert this improper 29.97 to actual 29.97 frame rate? thx

say I use virtualdub to change the frame to 29.97, this is just the actual NTSC standard fraction taken to the 2 decimals, but the fraction keeps going, and my approximation ignores the rest of the fraction.

I need to convert this frame to the actual NTSC standard framerate, but I can't do it with virtualdub

You repeating the same thing over and over again is not providing more information.

what specific information are you looking for?
he asked what I meant by improper, and I told him what I thought the answer was. are we on the same page here?

    No.
What was the frame rate of your original file?
What was "improper" about your vdub 29.97 converted file? It sounds like the problem may not be the frame rate but some other parameter.

Possibly you're using variable frame rate (which is evil)?

And BTW, judging from the near total incoherence of your questions I'd suggest you use something else that virtualdub. Perhaps handbrake or vidcoder or avidemux.

  8. Use AviFrate on the AVI you created with VirtualDub. Change the numerator to 30000 and the denominator to 1001.

But most programs ignore the difference between 29.97 and 30000/1001. The most notable exception is VirtualDub -- which will not let you append a video with slightly different frame rate.

so it really is just a simple header change? damn, I thought frame rate data actually affect the way the video is stored

In an AVI file the frame rate does effect the interleaving of audio and video chunks. But that doesn't matter much for editing purposes. And, of course, if you change the frame rate by a significant amount you will get audio sync problems. Otherwise, the frame rate is just a pair of numbers in the header.
