I have a couple of videos that I've been trying to convert to play on the Philips 5990_37 DVD player with a HDTV, but have spent a few DVDs not yet coming up with the right video protocols while maintaining video integrity - if I get any video at all. What conversion parameters would you suggest trying for the following? See the screenshots. Thanks,

    - Video 1: shows video resolution not accepted

    - Video 2: shows video codec not accepted

  2. 720x576 or smaller frame size. Mpeg 4 part 2 codec (Xvid or Divx). Don't use Xvid 3 warp point GMC. Keep bitrates below 10Kb/s. PAR/DAR flags are OK for the 5990.

Thanks, but no difference using either Any Video Converter or Pazera. At 720x576, the result is video protocol not supported on the first, and video codec not supported on the second. Plus, I've worked with a few converters and the only one that has a video bitrate settting anywhere near 10kb is FVD (16kb) and I can't get the current version to work.

  4. The 5990 is quite flexible at Divx/Xvid AVI playback. I don't know what your problem is since you don't give all the properties of your latest videos.

GSpot gives very good information about Divx/Xvid files.

Sorry, I mistyped the bitrate limit. It should have read 10 Mb/s (10000 kbps), not 10 Kb/s. You don't need to use 10000 kbps bitrates -- just avoid exceeding that. Most high quality standard definition Divx/Xvid encodings have bitrates down in the 2000 kbps range. Most you might download on the internet will be in the 1000 kbps range.

Thanks. GSpot screenshot for Video 1 is attached. GSpot doesn't show any info for Video 2 (file type and mime type unknown). What you see above is it. Not sure what's happening there.

  6. GSpot is showing that videos frame size to be 1024x576. That's too big for any Divx/DVD player. The rest of the properties look fine. GSpot doesn't show anything useful for MKV files.

And we don't need to see the properties of your source videos at this point. We already know they aren't suitable for the 5990. We need to see the properties of the videos you made from them.

Sorry, I didn't realize you wanted to see the converted ones. Here they are (720x576, MPEG4v2).

  8. The first image shows the frame size is still 1024x576. Otherwise it looks ok. The second video has an acceptable 720x576 frame size, but the MP42 fourcc probably doesn't work on the 5990. That's an old Microsoft MPEG 4 Part 2 beta encoder that has very little support.

Conversion program suggestions? I've got Pazera, Any Video Converter free and Handbrake. Attached are the options for Pazera. I just did a version of video 1 at 720x576 and msmpeg4 (screenshot), but it looks fairly blurry on my computer. Best to expect? Thanks for your patience.

Follow up: Video 1 now works with the 5990 (msmpeg4), although on a 40" TV it shows as a rectangle in the middle of the screen, with lots of border all the way around (top/bottom expected). Would a different video size come out better?

  10. I don't know any of those programs. Try the Xvid option in Pazera. Does it support Xvid profiles? If so, choose Xvid Home or Home Theater, whatever it's called.

You may have to force the pixel aspect ratio or display aspect ratio to get the right AR upon viewing. Maybe the program will do it for you.

To focus on the mkv file, it's 1280x720. What should I aim for there?

For both you should resize to 720x576 and set the Display Aspect Ratio to 16:9. Or resize to 720x404 and leave them square pixel (which appears to be the default in that program).

Does the program give you access to Xvid's configuration dialogs? If so, clock on the "more" button indicated:

Then go to the Aspect Ratio tab and set it like this:

Thanks. I'm now trying Prism converter, which does have some of those particulars. What program are your screenshots from?

  14. The screenshots were of VirtualDub. But the dialogs are part of the the Xvid codec.

This video, converted with Freemake, is working great now, format and subtitles, except for one thing: audio is left channel only when played on the 5990 (computer is ok). Any ideas as to why? Thanks,

  17. I suspect the 5990 doesn't support 6 channel AAC. Convert to stereo AAC or 6 channel AC3.
