I enjoy recording television with my Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 computer tuner. The trouble is when I play it back with the VCL player I usually get Stella videos except when I playback a recording of a motion pan of the TV camera. When you see a motion pan of the TV camera you get a venetian blind type image breakup. What I want to know can I stop this by upgrading my system? I have a computer with dual core Intel processor E5200 running at 2500 Hz and my video card is Nvidia GeForce GT 520.

So what will it take to stop this venetian blind type breakup when I playback a motion pan on my VCL player. Should I not use the VCL player? Should I get a more powerful CPU or or video card? Or is it my Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 computer tuner? Please tell me what will stop this from happening. And thanks.

This sounds like tearing caused by a vertical sync problem. Look for vertical sync-related settings in your player.

If your computer were battling to keep up on the other hand, you'd more likely see jerky playback with large jumps between momentarily frozen frames, but generally no tearing when vertical sync is correctly configured.

    Cheers,
    Francois

I solved several of my VLC player problems by not using it. VLC gets worse with every upgrade. Try MPC-BE, MPC-HC, or Potplayer. I'm using the latter three on an old 2.2 GHz dual-core with no problems. Also check the forum Tools section for media players.

Turn on the deinterlacer. Try Yadif 2x mode.

I have a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250. The problem you describe isn't caused by the WinTV-HVR-2250. If you are using the digital tuners, they provide the MPEG-2 video stream from the ATSC signal as is. Using the wrong encoding settings for the analog tuners or analog capture feature can cause blocky defects in the picture during fast motion, but not a venetian blind effect, as far as I have seen.

Change the settings for VLC as suggested, or use a different player. Media Player Classic BE or Media Player Classic Home cinema seem to be better at playing MPEG-2 video than VLC.
