  1. Has anyone come across the following sort of bizarre behaviour, with any NLE please?

Mine is Magix Movie Edit Pro Premium 2013 (MEP). I imported a JPG and it crashed the program. I re-opened the MEP project, saved it with a new name, re-opened it and checked that the timeline was playing correctly, then tried importing the JPG again (which I'd meanwhile also renamed). It crashed again. ('Serious problem ... must close.')

So, and this is the aspect I find weird, I made a slight edit of the JPG (a small crop), renamed it once more and tried again. Crashed.

I repeated that after other crops (in IrfanView), but identical results.

FWIW, the JPG was a screen capture from Google Maps, plus a couple of text captions in IrfanView. If anyone cares to experiment, it's here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4019461/Mojave-3.jpg

P.S. I wonder why I'm getting a spell-check error (squigly red underline) on the word 'behaviour'?

  2. Never heard of a real jpg causing a crash. (But you can embed malicious code into image files)

You can try saving it as a .bmp, .png, or .tiff to see if your program handles it better

  3. There are a few different "flavors" of JPEG. Maybe your editor doesn't like the "progressive" format and only supports "baseline".

  4. You asked: "I wonder why I'm getting a spell-check error (squigly red underline) on the word 'behaviour'?" Because you are in England and you spell words differently then us U.S. folks. Here it's spelled 'behavior'.

  5. I don't want to look at that jpg you posted but try another screen capture. Use the common print screen method used for windows.

  6. Thanks all. Started from scratch and my new JPG imported OK. Later out of curiosity I'll try re-saving that bad JPG as BMP or PNG.
