WHAT CABLES TO WHAT :-s

not sure this is in the correct place so sorry if its not

im trying to set up all the electrical devices in my room to play vision through my tv and sound through a surround sound


i have a philips hdtp8530 freeview box that has 1 hdmi output and a (s/pdif) output

a ps3 with digital audio out and 1 hdmi output

and a pc that can connect through a hdmi cable

the tv im using is a samsung LE32M86BD


the surround sound i have is an old philips dvd home theatre system HTS 3154 but i think this may be to old to do the job
i am willing to buy another modern surround sound if it is needed but if anyone could tell me how to connect them so they all play video through my tv and sound through my surround sound and what cabels i need you will make my day!

Easiest? Get a receiver with HDMI in/out then run HDMI cables from each source to the receiver and HDMI from the receiver to the TV. Disable the TV's speakers via its setup menus. You'll probably have to cut the connectors off the ends of the speaker wires to connect them to the new receiver.

Sound from all the HDMI inputs will play via the receiver and video will be sent to the TV via HDMI.

Receivers with HDMI A/V switching start around US$150. How much more you want to spend will depend on your needs and desires.

jagabo's suggestion is best for future-proofing, however an alternative would be (since according to the manual I read it looks to have 3 HDMI ins and 1 Optical Digital Audio audio out) hooking the devices directly to the TV and then hooking the TV (via Optical) to a receiver (most receivers since ~2003 have had Optical inputs).
The TV does the switching and routes whatever audio out through the Optical path. This is how I've got my system setup and it works great, because there are fewer times I have to mess with the audio remote. If all works correctly, it will also pass through compressed bitstreams (AC3, DTS, etc - mine does).

This may be a little more economical for you.

The problem with that is that often the TV strips/mixes the optical output down to stereo.

It won't if it does bitstream passthrough, but YMMV.

My Samsung TV converts everything to two channel at the optical output. It's definitely worth a try though.
