  1. I have a car stereo with a 7 inch tft screen that plays videos from usb stick
    (Ripspead dv740).
Some of the videos I have appear letterboxed, Id like to re encode them so they fill the screen.

But I’m not sure what to do, or with what tools?

I tried using ‘Any video convertor’ to encode some of the letterboxed avi’s changing the aspect ratio (ar) to match an avi that seemed to fix the screen nicely.
I got my new videos with a new aspect ratio – but they still displayed letterboxed

So I need to learn and understand (ar), maybe cropping, working out dimensions etc..

NB: The manual for the unit describes the screen as 7 inch diagonal (W 154.1 H 87) And it gives the resolution as 1440 x 234 (which sounds very narrow, + video with that (ar) wont play).

How do I work out what size video I need?
How do I work out the right ar ?
Do I need to crop a letterboxed avi to get an avi that fills the screen.?

Any advice, how to guides, software recommendations etc gratefully received.

easier to just use the zoom in function. re-encoding will just cut off the right and left sides the same as zoom in.

    and it's 480x234 not 1440x234.

I wish your profile would note the area where you live. Do you do any driving outside of that location? I'd want to avoid the roads there, wherever it is.

the player has 2 zoom settings:
Normal puts the video in a box in the middle of the screen
Zoom gives me the letter box
I suspect I will have to crop the video

Your safe for now - I'm in the UK!
Seriously though, the videos are to entertain the kids in the car, whilst I'm parked up waiting for the other kids to finish swimming, karate, rugby, Astronomy, Chess club, band practice etc ....... u get the picture! Too many children\activities. I'm not even Catholic, there's no excuse for it.

Good, be careful. I passed a wreck on the interstate in Virginia here, the in-dash TV in plain sight (easy to see with the front half of the car torn away). Not pretty.

We visit the UK every three years or so. We use bicycles on those winding Yorkshire roads. Amazing, the number of autos that zoom past, drivers babbling into mobiles. Watch out for us.

you might try using vidcoder. it has an easy to use crop, and a preview to see how it looks. put in the height and width of your device, uncheck keep aspect ratio, and have at it.
