I am getting into editing as a steady job, and need something that will keep cooler than my laptop. I have a nice monitor already that I use, so I don't need that. For $1000, what components would you suggest? (I will not have the time to build this myself, so must be available from someone) I would like the video card to be compatible with Vegas Pro 11 so I gain that benefit.
Thanks,
Tyler

Small update, I may be able to have the computer built, so that is a potential option at least.

a good editing system will probably run twice your budget. the video card alone will run 300-400. look at the computer specs under my name, that what i use. and you'll need a second calibrated ips monitor for good color rendition, not a normal tn monitor.

Why don't you get the info straight from the horse's mouth and look at the Vegas website. They provide info about recommended systems, including CPUs, speed, RAM, HD space, OS, 32 v. 64bit, and video cards. Then, IIWY, I'd bump that up a notch or 2 to allow for "comfortable/snappy" operation.

If you can re-use some parts from your old PC (SATA hard drives, an optical drive and possibly SATA cables), you might be able buy the other parts to have a friend put together a PC for $1000 - $1300, depending on the Windows 7 64-bit OS license ($100 and up depending on the version). The video card and motherboard are not as good as what aedipuss shows in his PC details. A good second monitor will add significantly to your cost, but I would listen to aedipuss on that score. An aftermarket CPU cooler would probably be a good investment, but I don't know what to suggest.

nice list. about all i'd change is bump the video card up to gtx670 and the cpu to the i7-3770k(runs cooler, less power required).

I initially selected the i7-3770k, but changed to a Sandy Bridge model on account of the motherboard BIOS. Some customers at Newegg were complaining in September that the BIOS version on their motherboard didn't recognize their Ivy Bridge CPU. ASRock said they will replace the BIOS if the board were RMA'ed, but who wants to do that?

by now they should all be v2.1 or v2.2 bios boards as the update is over 6 months old... wishful thinking?
