Can anything be done about this to 'save the day'? Searching high and low I finally found a well-made rip of the movie now this :/

    Thank you.

You could re-rip your dvd and use another audio format... or try Handbrake, Total Video Converter or perhaps Virtual Dub (like this: http://superuser.com/questions/63736/how-do-i-hard-code-a-movie-with-subtitles)

Thanks Nikse for the reply and the tips.

I thought I hadn't got any replies - turns out my e-mail forwarding had stopped working... in the meantime I tried - and liked - WINAVI All-in-one-converter.

No geekery and undocumented features, just straight-forward, fast, good-quality video conversion. In fact I'm sold.

I've been using Xvid4PSP to add permanent subs. If you feed it the subtitle file in Unicode format it can work with any language there is.
