If possible, how do I copy (part of) a DVD to my LG RHT497H hard disc?

If it's not protected you can use DVDShrink to edit out a section. If it is, you will need something like AnyDVD in conjunction with DVDShrink.

He can't use those, it's a standalone dvd recorder.
