if all you did was format(erase) the hard drive, it should be fine. press record.

You could try downloading the instructions/owners manual.

if it's under warranty send it to a service center, there isn't anything else you can do to fix it. if it isn't, try recording to an sd card, if that doesn't work either then i'd start looking for a new cam.

I have an SR12. Formatting the HDD automatically comes from choices on the menu and shouldn't make the HDD fail. But HDDs fail anyway, formatting notwithstanding. You can use Sony's rabid memory stick and choose to record your movies there instead; there is a menu option that asks if you like to record to HDD or memory schtick.

thanks but my touch screen doesn't work so i can use only with the computer. i also don't have a memory stick and even if i had, it doesn't solve the problem with the hard disk.
thanks anyway. i will wait until a solution will come from somewhere. i wish it will be soon...

There's your problem: your touchscreen doesn't work. Formatting the HDD inside the SR12 is a process unique to that camcorder that has to be initiated within the camcorder, ergo, it HAS to be done with the touchscreen. I think if you go through the instruction manual it says there somewhere that deliberately formatting the HDD connected through USB by a computer MAY NOT make it work afterwards. Note that just because you can see the HDD structure and contents when it is in PC mode does NOT necessarily mean you can tinker away with it; there will be hidden files, folders, probably even a filesystem that's slightly or grossly different from either FAT32 or NTFS unique to the SR12 that only it alone can generate. There's also the problem of initializing the HDD, which can't be done from the PC unless, I suppose, you have the appropriate programs from Sony and others. Lastly, you need the touchscreen to deliberately get into and out of USB PC mode; merely plugging the USB cable in and out is NOT enough. This problem is not unique to the SR12; many PVRs, when disconnecting from the box and putting in a PC the contents can't be seen. I also have a Hitachi external USB HDD, which when I removed from the case, I couldn't access the contents via direct SATA on the PC. If you love that SR12 that much you will want to have the evil touchscreen repaired 1st and foremost. So there.

I would suggest finding someone with an identical camcorder. Have them format their camcorder using the touchscreen in the proper way. Connect their camcorder to a computer. Copy the blank AVCHD file structure that their camcorder produced during the format initialization onto your computer. Now copy that AVCHD file structure onto your camcorder.
