I'm currently running a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz which is a few years old now. I'd like to buy a new $500 or so complete system for video encoding, perhaps from Newegg, Tigerdirect, etc. Any pre-built systems that you can recommend that will perform better than my current system? From what I recall, Intel consistently performs better with video encoding so that's a starting point at least.....

    ?

I think you need to slow down and examine your assumptions.

What are you trying to accomplish?

No assumptions here. One of the office PC's went down and I need to buy a new system. I'll pass my current video editing system along to that person. Whatever I buy today for around the same price that I bought a few years ago, is going to be better just by the nature of how the CPUs continue to improve. I want to know what pre-built system from newegg or tigerdirect, for my budget I should get for best performance in video encoding.

The "prebuilts" often have in inferior components and/or are full of crapware. Better to build your own or work with a local custom PC shop.

I know about all the junk software.. The hard drive can always be wiped clean and start with a clean OS. I'm more interested in the hardware. With encoding, the CPU is the most important component, so I was looking for a pre built budget system with a good CPU for encoding. I'm not looking for top of the line obviously.. The Intel I5 looks pretty nice from what I've read so far..

Ok, I've decided to go the build my own route. Been reading on this page:

    http://www.videoguys.com/Guide/E/Videoguys+System+Recommendations+for+Video+Editing/0x...ce243a6c6.aspx

    Do you like their recommendations?

Thinking of going with this CPU:

But not sure which motherboard to purchase with it....

i might go for the newer Core i5-2405S with hd3000 graphics or an i5 "k" model with unlocked multiplier for overclocking.

motherboard depends a lot on whether you want to use the cpu's onboard graphic or an add-in video card.
