What did you rip the DVD with?
The best way I know to solve sync issues is to rip MOVIE ONLY from the disc since that is all you will be using anyway....then convert to xvid or h264.

What other programs have you tried? Have you tried handbrake? Handbrake does not do avi, it only does MP4 or MKV but i have not had any sync issues with this program.
Murphy's law taught me everything I know.

Handbrake actually dropped support for outputting to AVI containers a couple of years ago, although maybe there is some secret way to make it still do it. I don't know.

    Handbrake 0.9.3 outputs as AVI.

XmediaRecode always works for me for H264 output - haven't bothered with Xvid encoding in a long time. FreeMake also works, and is fast, but cannot crop the video so it will encode any black bars in the source.
