I have burned about 100+ backup DVD copies using DVDshrink and then DVD Decrypter or
ImgBurn. I have the newest version of ImgBurn and newest supported firmware in my DVD burner.
I have used TY02 discs forever and have never experienced a bad burn but all of a sudden, I am
getting I/O errors which I have included the logs for. I have ruled out the discs as being faulty
because I am geting perfect burns using the same discs and software in another burner on my desktop.
I have checked and both DVD drive and hard drive ar DMA enabled. I have also tried burning at slower speeds
than 8x with the same amount of I/O errors.

I would say the DVD laser is fried, since writers are cheap nowadays I would buy another.

Same drive, same file, verified and burnt fine with a different brand disc. I can't believe it is the discs type as I have used these for years in the drive. Why all of a sudden would Taiyo Yudens not work in this drive?

Try burning at a lower speed and see if that helps. Many DVD burning problems are solved this way.
-
Tried 2x and 1x with same result. Why would CMC be ok at 4x and not TY02? Weird.................
-
It could still possibly be the burner is beginning to fail. Maybe the other media burns a bit easier than the TYs. Usually trying a slower speed helps with that, but I think you said you've tried that.
And with a failing laser, you should have got a power calibration error. Your error looks more like a interface error between the PC and the burner. But that wouldn't explain why a different media works.
Other possibilities are that the new burner firmware is flawed and wrong for TYs, but you should have noticed this right after you updated the firmware and burned your first disc. Or is it possible those are fake TYs? Or just a bad batch? One last possibility is that the version of ImgBurn you are using is the problem. You could try a earlier version and see if that helps. But I think you said you also tried Decrypter and had the same results.
My guess would be a burner firmware problem. -
i've had this b4 on a few drives and for me, it meant that the drives were going bad...i could get a few burns done but most would give the I/O error..i would try another Media Code brand of disc and if it does the same thing...your drives had its day
-
Assuming its not a firmware problem (I tried to update the original firmware and the site said my firmware was the newest version available), any other guesses. If the drive were failing, would it make a cliccking noise about 2/3 of the way through the burn?
-
Would ability to playback DVDs or CDs or the ability to burn CDs give any additional info. The drive plays back CD and DVD perfectly. I will try to burn a CD and see what happens.
-
yeah it would be goin bad with a clicking sound but it comes down to this...do u wanna wonder or worry every time you burn a disc? or down the road u pop it in and it doesnt read? i would spend $28 and get a new one, and not risk it
-
CD burns use a different laser. Most often the DVD laser fails first on optical drives, but I'm not saying that's your problem. But successful CD burning doesn't mean you have successful DVD burning.
When optical drives can't find the 'track' on the disc, the circuitry tries to 'seek' it and you may be hearing those noises as the laser mechanism flails back and forth. If you got them a lot with a disc read, the OS may revert the drive to the much slower PIO mode, along with a increase in hard drive activity.
Since you seem to have a laptop drive, you might consider getting a external optical burner. Laptop burners can be fairly expensive and a real pain to replace. -
Laptop optical drives are notoriously picky.

I encountered the same problem using DVD Decypter. After changing the blank disc, it works fine. when i examine the initial disc, i found out that there are some defects/scratches on the disc.
