The video container format from my camera (Fuji) is AVI
These files play happily in for example Windows Media Player ...... but when I play with DivX Plus Player the sound is very distorted and one channel only.
DivX state reason is that the files are in AVI PCM 1 format, and DivX does not support PCM 1
I was using DivX as the standard for all my other video files, so I don't really want to drop Div X.
What would be by best route ... stop using Div X Plus Player or shoulkd I convert the audio away from PCM 1 ? ........ if so with what and what to ... (why I'm posting in Newbie sub forum)

Change the audio to 48 KHz, 16 bit, mono or stereo. You can leave it PCM, or if you want smaller files use MP3 at ~256 kbps.
-
In case I'm not following correctly .. (and to help with knowledge)
I have around 60 or 70 video files ... all recorded the same ( it's what teh camera gives as file format)
When you say change audio to 48Khz ... where ? ...... do you mean open each in turn (with what program) and save with new settings, ........ all existing and all new would have to be changed ? ...
Does this not lose sound quality ? ... if I have to change it would I be better choosing something else ?
Also ... is this unusual,? would have thought that is the built if the windows player can play audio OK, I would have thought a glossy feature rich player like DivX would have no problem. -
I have no idea why Divx Player can't handle your 16 KHz, 8 bit, mono audio. If you insist on using Divx Player it looks like you'll have to convert the audio. The audio is very low quality to start with. Converting to 48 KHz, 16 bit stereo PCM won't lose any quality but the size of the audio will increase by 12 fold. Even compressing that with 256 kbps MP3 won't cause any noticeable loss of quality.
I would try using VirtualDub as a test:
1) File -> Open AVI file
2) Video -> Direct Stream Copy (no change in video quality or size)
3) Audio -> Full Processing Mode
4) Audio -> Conversion... 48000 Hz, 16-bit, Stereo, High Quality
5) (optional) Audio -> Compression... choose codec and settings
6) File -> Save as AVI (will create a new AVI file)
That should only take a minute or so. Verify that Divx Player plays the resulting file properly and it sounds ok.
It would be much simpler to just use a player that can handle the original 16 KHz, 8 bit, mono audio. -
I only used DivX player as I 'paid' for DivX licenses (on previous ver as I wanted codec)
I can still use codec, and dump the player ........ what is considered to be the better medi plyer for windows ? .......... or should I stick with Windows Media Player. -
Just did this ... interesting result. (even if I don't know what they mean)
Original file if played with DivX would play L chn audio only, and sound with severe distortion, (almost just white noise) also a metronome beat at 2Hz. (plyed OK on WMP)
Now having carried out above steps and conveted to 4800 16 bit stereo ...DivX .. plays both channels, and with sound no pulsing up & down, no distortion no beat ... but interseting I did the same again but compressing to 256kb CBR MP3 using LAME .... and now the 2Hz metronome is back.
However if I play that file with WMP ... there is no metronome beat.
DivX certainly does not seem to like my video clips. -
Did a search on what player ...and the VLC came out best player for 2011 on all fronts, so downloaded that.
Results same as for WMP .... i.e. plays original OK, converted OK & converted & compressed.
So dump DivX player seems the answer
The reason I went DivX is that I purchased DivX Pro to get me the DivX 6.9.2 codec ... converting VHS files to AVI and used the DivX codec for this. (not sure if there is now something better)Last edited by Tafflad; 25th Jul 2011 at 13:25.
