  2. AFAIK, you cannot play movies from a USB flash drive with that player. The USB is for "extra memory storage", i.e. for downloaded BD-Live content and firmware updates.

    And welcome to the forum.

  4. AFAIK means "as far as I know".

User's manuals and specs are often vague, and I suspect purposely so. The specs for that player say what I posted above, and say nothing about playing movies from a flash drive. Now, just because they don't say so doesn't mean it can't do something, keeping in mind just how uninformative the manufacturers tend to be. But that feature is something they would tout, I should think.

At any rate, Sony isn't known for offering, hmmm, flexibility in its players. That S560 model player is, so to speak, the "big brother" to my S360 players, the difference being Wi-Fi essentially. The S360 definitely does *not* play anything from flash drive except BD-Live content. It can be used for that and firmware updates, that's it.

Your player does, however, play AVCHD (high definition video) from a burned DVD. It's a camcorder format originally, sort of a "Blu-Ray lite". You could consider converting your movies to AVCHD and burning them to DVDRs for playback on your standalone. If your videos are uncropped H.264 in MKV, the process might be comparatively simple.

    Good luck.

FYI, the S370/S570 models (Costco/Sams version BX37/BX57) play files from the USB drive and it is all spelled out in the manual. Although they claim compatibility with h.264/ac3 in MKV wrapper, some work some don't. Rewrapping to mp4 or m2ts is more successful.

From statements made on this forum, the S380/S580 adds hard disk support over USB. Some claim it works with NTFS formatted drives. Others disagree.

I play files over DLNA wired Ethernet with my BX37 so haven't pushed USB very far.

That works as well with mine. But "AVCHD" means it must be a m2ts wrapper. You can change the wrapper in MultiAVCHD.

My BX37 plays these files directly off USB or DLNA Ethernet, no need to burn them.
