Hello !
First post here.
I have spent hours reading articles and posts, and I am more confuse than before...
I have been using DVDfab for a long time to backup my DVDs but now I want to move on to AVI instead.
Unfortunately DVDfab cannot keep audio in sync when I use this functionality in this program.
What program you guys use that gives good result for DVD to AVI conversion ?
I am looking for a one click conversion, set it and forget it type of app...
Thanks !

I tend to keep things simple. DVDfab to ISO then Fairusewizard to avi.

I rip with DVDFab, then use XmediaRecode 2.3.0.9 (slightly older version than is current because of some technical issues with the last couple of versions) to output MP4. It will happily do avi files, but I get much higher quality from AVC/AC3

HandBrake to MKV with the source audio. It's usually AC-3 5.1 anyway. If you rip several DVDs to your hard drive, you can batch them together and process overnight if needed. You can also store your settings as a custom setting and select it. It takes my PC about 20 -25 minutes to process each DVD. I use CQ settings of 19.5 and end up with MKVs that vary from 600MB to about 1.8GB, depending on the individual DVD file.

Wow, thanks !
I see most of you use 2 steps for this. I was just checking if there was a better way to do this...
I am also using FairUse Wizard, set on "full auto mode". It works well for the dvds I already backup with DVDfab.
Quite pleased with the results so far.
Thanks again. -
From the other posts, you've probably realized there are a lot of ways to encode your videos.
Most of the time, the 'One click wonders' do a lot of compromises to convert the videos. Some work better than others. FUW does fairly well. But it you want more control or maybe better quality, it usually takes a couple of programs or more to do the best quality encodes. Depends on how much effort you want to expend and how important the resulting quality is.

That's interesting because this is what I used to backup my DVDs but could not keep the audio in sync with the video when converting to AVI. Must be something I am doing wrong...
Right now FUW is doing okay because I am using it with the DVD backups, not the originals...
Edit:
I just tried DVDfab again using the same settings used in FUW. The Audio was 850ms off right from the start and getting worst as the movie advanced...Last edited by mpoirier; 27th Apr 2011 at 19:31.

Which is why you're better off ripping the DVD as a single VOB and using DGIndex to demux the audio and video, creating a D2V file which you can open in Virtualdub with an Avisynth script. The audio has the offset (if any) in the filename so you'll know what to set under audio interleave in Virtualdub.
You can either save as an AVI or you can use the new external encoder feature to save as 264/aac or 264/ac3 (passthrough) MP4 or MKV. It's not a one click wonder and kinda intimidating to learn but you have more control over your final output. There is a guide on how to use the external encoder feature on the Virualdub forum and a guide on how to use DGIndex in the help files.

I haven't used Fair Use Wizard but I have used Handbrake. The key to minimizing sync issues is ripping to a single VOB. Trying to convert multiple VOBs into a single file often leads to Sync issues. -
Rip to to Video_ts folder with dvdfab then convert to avi with Free DVD Video Converter 1.3. Can't get any easier.

AutoGK is the best companion to DVDFab.
The only options you need to set (and then forget) are:
Target Quality: (Step 3) 75% gives the best, 50% gives good.
Width: (Step 4)1280 gives you HD, 720 gives you SD.
Keep the audio CBR, but you can bump up the bitrate if you want.
Note: AutoGK keeps a copy of the audio files in the Temp folder for later use if you want.
That's It! -
It is not a One Click Wonder but ... TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress ... has Divx support and has 2 Pass Support. And the audio is not VBR ... it is CBR.
The CBR for the audio makes it easy to mess with the AVI video file in Virtualdub after I've got the AVI video from ... TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress -
As a 1 click wonder Freemake Video Converter moves pretty good if you have a Nvidia card that supports Cuda. Trying not to sound like a plug.....
From their website http://www.freemake.com/ "Convert video free to AVI, MP4, WMV, MKV, SWF, FLV, 3GP, MPEG, DVD, Blu-ray, MP3, iPod, iPhone, iPad, PSP, PS3, Android, YouTube, and more. 200+ Input Formats Freemake is the only free video converter that takes online videos through direct URL copypaste from YouTube, Facebook, MTV, Vimeo, Dailymotion, ComedyCentral, Megavideo (This I haven't tried yet.)"
I've been using it to convert many things to MKV to play in my WD media player. The price is right and most of the time the quality is ok with one pass. If I see one pass isn't cutting it then I can tinker to get better. So far no crashes and it makes it easy for me to take multi part video and output one video. I always Liked TMPGEnc and am still using it if I need to filter or edit, but for Q&D this is easier.
One Gotcha I have to watch for is sometimes on my DVD to MKV it defaults to 25fps even though thye are NTSC, I haven't figured out what trips that.If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself. -
I'm surprised to see so many different recommendations for someone that has asked specifically for a one-click VOB to AVI solution, and yet I'm the only one to offer AutoGK.
I thought it was common knowledge that AutoGK is absolutely THE best solution hands down, and something the OP would be very happy with. Not to mention it has sub-programs that were built by the very best people in the field that care about quality.
Handbrake doesn't do VOB to AVI, TMPGenc is not "one-click", DGindex, Virtualdub, and AviSynth are not "one-click", in fact not anything mentioned here is one-click except AutoGK.
Whew! -
Ummm.... FU is just as much "1 Click" as AutoGK
Whether i am using AGK or FU I still prefer to change the setting to what I want or need them to be.
And for someone new to the whole deal, FU is quite a bit more "user friendly".
But yeah,i thought it was interesting how the OP asked for a specific format and MKV, MP4, etc popped up
