  1. Been a while since I needed to backup a DVD. It's been years. Boy, things have sure changed. I remember when...

It used to take 8-10 hours or more to re-encode with CCE or the like.
Now takes about an hour or two, even on 6 passes.

You could not even go near your computer during a re-encode. If you sneezed it would hang your system.
Now you can multitask while you re-encode.

DVD-DL was new and working the layer break was tough.
    Not an issue now.

    Yup, I remember when...
Don't give in to DVD2ONE, that leads to the dark side.

Still not a good idea -- there are complications from shared hard drive writes, in the forum of digi-boogers (artifacts). Simply leave a machine alone when it's encoding.

I remember when it used to take double that to encode a VCD from a DVD!!!
    LOL!!!!
    Main movie only of course.

I used to have a pc in a spare room that i would use just for the purpose of encoding!!!

I also adhere to that philosophy 99% of the time, but there have been moments when i was encoding a bunch of Xvids with FU and at the same time played COD: Black Ops, WAW, MW2, DS, & never had a problem with either the encodes or playing the game

And i always at least listen to music, DL something and surf at the same time regardless if i am using DVD Rebuilder with CCE or FU encoding Xvids and my system does not even hiccup

Back in the early day's, as Marco33 stated, you would not even dare sneak open the door to the room where your PC was located for fear of it crashing let alone trying to surf while encoding a VCD!!!
    LMAO!!!

First encodes, to VCD, would probably have been Matrix. Might have been Shrek ... don't remember for sure. Though my early days here were all about recording from cable/satelite.

However, the biggest change for me - no more re-encoding. It's all straight to hard drive now and view via WDTV Live. Disk space is just way to cheap to spend time and effort on shrinking things. I mean, come on, less than $100US for 2TB drives now. That's probably 100 BR movies (20gb avg) or 250 DVD movies.
    Have a good one,

  8. Digi-boogers?

That should be added to the "Artifact" entry in the Glossary.

    OMG!!!

It has been so many years i would not even have a clue as to what my first conversion from dvd to vcd was!

I remember doing Spawn: The Animated Series and i am sure a ton of other stuff!

I used to use a program (don't recall the name of it) that would convert from DVD to VCD/MPG1 on the fly, as it read the dvd in your drive it would convert to VCD/Mpg1 and save it to your HDD.

The only problem was by the time it was done your dvd in the drive would be smoking hot!!
    LOL!!

Then i started to rip to the HDD and use Tmpgenc and VCDEasy i think to convert them.

Man, it was so long ago it's hard to remember all the different programs!!

I used to have a Terapin VCD recorder and when i bought one when they first came out i thought it was the greatest thing ever!!
    LOL!!

I think that was mine too. Back when I first got a computer with a dvdrom. I think it was only 2x or something ridiculuosly slow - no dvd burner yet at that time of course.

I remember all the reading about CVD and why it is "future proof", while SVCD was not!
And TMPGenc-ology. Endless discussions about TMPGenc and virtualdub back then.
I remember that I use to encode 2 days a VHS tape with all the filters on my Duron 1200! And when I finished with some important tapes, after 2 years, I copied all the files to a huge 120GB HDD, so to start burning DVDs (I just got my first DVD burner on home). And that brand new HDD (a Seagate...) broke and I lost all the archives!
I was drunk for 2 days after this...

But all the things I learned the hard way back then, are still useful today.

    Hey, my favorite Greek!

I don't miss the CCE vs TMPGEnc debates. Glad that MainConcept killed that.
Same for endless whinging about ATI cards.

Ah, yeah... I was an ATI hater back then, because of the ATI drivers!
ATI cards owns you lots Lordsmurf. If it wasn't for you, ATI wouldn't stand a chance.

What I also remember, is Sefy posting about his realtime mjpeg matrox card and King John being a moderator. And Kwag talking about his ideas (KDVD, KVCD, KSVCD and whatever K. It ...key us for good.

A different time. Mpeg 2 was the new thing in town and DivX/XviD something for "nerds"
The ultimate statement from Adam (moderator back then, just like me) that: "There won't be ever any DVD standalone player to support DivX/XviD, because DivX/XviD is not what Every Joe does".
Just 4 years later, even cellphones supported DivX/XviD!

Don't mention my posts. Some of them was legendary. Me against all !

My first VCD was probably music videos, or porn.
